How To Look Up Recent Arrest Records in Greene County Virginia for Free
Greene County is a rural county with a relatively small population. Like similar Virginia counties, it doesn’t maintain its own jail. Instead, prisoners are sent to the Central Virginia Regional Jail, which also serves Fluvanna, Louisa, Madison, and Orange counties.1
If you want to find Greene County jail records, the facility should be your first stop. However, it’s also possible to find out information about Greene County bookings through the sheriff’s office.
Track Down Incarcerated Individuals in Greene County VA
Unlike many other corrections facilities across the country, the Central Virginia Regional Jail doesn’t offer users a way to look up inmates online. There’s also no convenient way to find someone’s mugshot on the jail’s website.
Therefore, the best way to find out if someone is incarcerated in the jail is by contacting the facility directly.
Here’s the address for the jail:
Central Virginia Regional Jail
13021 James Madison Highway
Orange, VA 22960
You can also call the jail at 540.672.3222. Office hours are Monday through Friday, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Alternatively, you can inquire about Greene County arrest records through the sheriff’s office. Because the county is so sparsely populated, the Greene County Sheriff’s Office is the only law enforcement agency in the county.2 There are no other local police departments.
You can reach the office using this contact information:
Greene County Sheriff’s Office
10005 Spotswood Trail
Stanardsville, VA 22973
The Greene County Sheriff’s Office’s phone number is 434.985.222. Alternatively, you can fax a records request to 434.985.3373.
You can also use a third-party service called VINELink to locate inmates across most Virginia corrections facilities, including the Central Virginia Regional Jail.3
How To Access Criminal History Information in Greene County
When you conduct a free criminal record check — including finding out information about court cases, arrests, warrants, and probation sentences — you can build a more complete picture of someone’s past.
There are several custodians that maintain Greene County public records related to criminal activity. In this resource, we’ll cover the most efficient ways to track down Greene County criminal records.
Obtain Anyone’s Criminal Records Using Online Search Tools
There are two courts in Greene County, the Circuit Court and the District Court, which is part of the General & Juvenile & Domestic Relations District Combined Courts.
Both courts try cases related to criminal charges. The Circuit Court handles cases related to more serious offenses — felonies — while the District Court has jurisdiction over misdemeanors.
The District Court also holds preliminary hearings for some felony cases that will later be tried in the Circuit Court.
You can conduct a Greene County case search by using the Virginia Judiciary’s Online Case Information System 2.0 to find out information from both courts. You can choose to search either one or both courts by selecting the appropriate courts from the drop-down menu all the way to the right (by default, this is set to “All Courts” in Virginia).
Once you’ve entered your search criteria (the defendant’s last name is the only requirement), you’ll be able to see a list of matching cases. This online directory will include relevant case numbers, dates, the names of the defendants, and the charges against them.
By selecting a hot-linked case number for any line item on the list, you’ll be able to see more information about the criminal case. This includes charge and sentence details.
If you’re searching for information on an open case, you can choose to “Subscribe” to a case. Doing so will send reminders about upcoming court hearings to your phone or email address.
You can also search for information on felony cases tried by the Greene County Circuit Court by using the Virginia Court Case Information tool. Researchers should be sure to select “Greene Circuit Court” from the list of available counties.
After you enter the county court name and select “Begin,” you’ll be taken to a page where you can choose to search cases by party name, case number, or hearing date. (Researchers should specify “Criminal” to weed out civil case information, if desired.)
After entering their search criteria, researchers can then see a list of matching cases. By clicking on any hot-linked case number, they can find out more details.
Similarly, you can search for public records involving misdemeanor cases by using the Virginia Judicial Branch’s General District Court Online Case Information System. When using this tool, researchers should be sure to choose “Greene General District” from the drop-down menu of jurisdictions on the lefthand side of the website. Below that, they can select to search criminal and traffic cases by the defendant’s name, case number, or hearing date.
Entering the search criteria will allow you to choose from a list of matching cases. You’ll then be able to see more information about the charge and punishment, if any.
Request Information on Past Charges & Criminal Convictions Through the Greene County Court Clerks
Just as there are two courts in Greene County that try criminal cases, there are also two clerks of the courts.
The Greene County Clerk of the Circuit Court is the public records repository for felony cases tried in the county.7 You can place a records request directly with the clerk’s office.
Copies cost $0.25 per page for letter-size document copies and $0.50 per page for legal-size document copies.
The clerk accepts cash, checks, and money orders as forms of payment for mailed-in requests or you can place an order over the phone or in person and use a Visa or MasterCard to pay. However, this adds an extra $2 convenience fee to the total.
Here’s the contact information:

See Who Has an Active Arrest Warrant in Greene County Virginia
Unlike some law enforcement agencies across the country, the Greene County Sheriff’s Office does not post warrant information online.
Therefore, the best way to uncover information about Greene County warrants is by contacting the department directly. You can do so by calling the sheriff’s office at 434.985.2222. Alternatively, you can fax an inquiry to 434.985.3373.
Or you can request information about warrants by sending a letter to the office or visiting in person at this address:
Greene County Sheriff’s Office
10005 Spotswood Trail
Stanardsville, VA 22973
However, it’s important that you understand that if you have an open warrant and visit the Greene County Sheriff’s Office in person, you will likely be arrested on the spot.
The Virginia Department of Corrections also posts a “Most Wanted” list online that you can check to see the state’s highest-priority fugitives (as well as some who have already been arrested).8 However, the list doesn’t specify from which county the fugitives come.
Check Probationer Information in Greene County Virginia
Probation programs allow offenders to serve sentences at home or in the community, rather than facing incarceration in jail.
The most expedient way to find out if someone has been granted a probation sentence in Greene County, Virginia, is by using the state’s unified Online Case Information System 2.0. You’ll find detailed information about getting started with this tool in the section of this resource dealing with criminal court records above.
If someone has been handed a probation sentence, you’ll be able to find that out by checking the “Disposition Information” section of the case record.
You can find out more information about probation programs by contacting the Virginia Department of Corrections’ Office of Probation and Parole. This office oversees probation services for the different counties in the state. Greene County is in District 26 of the department, along with Culpeper, Madison, and Orange counties.9
Here’s the contact information:

Acquire a Background Check Report in Greene County VA
Conducting a background check involves using government databases to look up someone’s criminal record. You may be required to undergo a background check if you’re applying for a new position, attempting to gain a license, looking to volunteer, or trying to rent a home.
Background checks conducted for reasons like these are often referred to as professional background checks. You may also hear them referred to as Level 1 or 2 checks. Level 1 checks involve running a search on someone’s name, while level 2 checks involve matching the party’s fingerprints against those in a database.
According to the U.S. Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA), it’s illegal to conduct a background check for professional purposes without first getting the written consent of the subject.10
There are also regulations about how information gathered from a background check may be used. If you believe that someone has used a background check against you unlawfully, you can contact the U.S. Federal Trade Commission or the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission for assistance.
On the other hand, if you want to find out more information about someone for purely personal reasons — such as to get the “back story” on a potential date or new colleague — you don’t need their prior consent. You can efficiently conduct such a personal check by using any of the free public records search methods detailed in this resource.
However, if you’re required to undergo a professional background check, you can request one from the Virginia State Police. The police offer three background check services:
- Form SP-167 Criminal History Records Check: This background check is available for private businesses and out-of-state agencies. The cost is $15, and you can add on a sex offender registry search for $5 more.
- Form SP-230 Criminal History Records Check: This is the check intended for in-state agencies and healthcare employers. As with the SP-167 check, the cost is $15. You can also combine the basic criminal history records check with a sex offender registry check for $5.
- Form SP-266 Sex Offender and Crimes Against Minors Search: This specialized check is offered to in-state agencies, volunteer organizations, and employers where children may be involved. This search costs $15, but eligible nonprofits can receive a discounted rate of $8.
The SP-167 and SP-230 checks can be conducted as Level 1 checks or Level 2 checks by adding on a fingerprint request. Fingerprinting costs $10 for the initial card and $5 for each extra set. You can schedule a fingerprinting session at any of the state police’s fingerprint capture locations.
Payment for all of the state police’s background checks can be made in the form of a business or certified check, money order, or Visa or MasterCard debit or credit card. You can find the forms for each of these checks on the Virginia State Police website. The completed forms — along with a notarized statement to the effect that the search subject consents to the background check — should be mailed to this address:
Virginia State Police
Central Criminal Records Exchange
P.O. Box 85076
Richmond, VA 23285
It’s important to note that you can order a criminal history records check of your own files. This can be helpful to make sure there are no inaccuracies in your own records before undergoing a professional background check.
To do so, you can order a Form SP-167 Criminal History Records Check using the NotaryCam service.
This service electronically notarizes your application for an additional $15 per form. You can pay for this service with a debit or credit card online at the time of notarization.
How To View Criminal Records in Virginia Through State & Federal Agencies

Before exploring individual agencies, consult the resource on accessing Virginia arrest and criminal history information for a thorough overview of available resources.
Relevant agencies and their search tools are linked and explained below.
Virginia Department of Corrections Inmate Locator: This tool allows users to look up current inmates in state-run prisons by name or ID number.
Federal Bureau of Prisons (BOP) Inmate Search Tool: This free service lets researchers locate current prisoners in BOP jails.12
Virginia Sex Offender Registry: Interested parties can find Virginia-based offenders by name, zip code, city, county, or even college.
U.S. Justice Department National Sex Offender Public Website: Anyone can use this tool to find registered sex offenders by name or location.
Virginia State Police Criminal History Record Check: For a fee, you can order a background check on another person (or yourself).13 The section of this guide dealing with background checks contains more details.
How To Retrieve Court Records in Greene County
Before attempting to locate court records, it’s helpful to understand how Virginia’s court system is set up.
The highest court in the commonwealth is the Virginia Supreme Court. The Supreme Court is an appellate court that hears appeals for cases previously heard by the Court of Appeals as well as the Circuit and District Courts. You can search Virginia Supreme Court cases using the court’s Case Information online search tool.
Below the Supreme Court is the Virginia Court of Appeals, which considers decisions originally made by the Circuit and District Courts. The Court of Appeals also has an online Case Information search tool.
Then there’s the Circuit Court, which is a trial court that hears cases involving felony criminal offenses and civil claims. The Circuit Court also hears divorce cases and matters involving probate disputes.
Greene County is in the 16th Judicial Circuit, which also includes Charlottesville and Albemarle, Culpeper, Fluvanna, Goochland, Louisa, Madison, and Orange counties.
You can use the Virginia Court Case Information tool to look up Greene County judicial records involving the Circuit Court. Researchers can select whether to search criminal or civil records by name, case number, or court date.
Once you’ve entered your search criteria, you’ll be able to view an index of matching cases. From there, you can select any hot-linked case number to find more information about the case, including party names and judgments.
In addition, you can also look up criminal cases tried by the Circuit Court using the Virginia Judiciary’s Online Case Information System 2.0. This section in this guide on looking up criminal case information above contains detailed information about this tool.
Greene County also features the General, Juvenile & Domestic Relations District Combined Courts, which hear cases involving misdemeanors, civil claims, custody disputes, etc.15
You can also use the Virginia Judicial Branch’s General District Court Online Case Information System to find Greene County court records. Requesters should be sure to specify “Greene General District” on the left hand side of the website and then select whether to view criminal or civil cases.
You can search District Court records by name or case number to find out more information about the parties involved, as well as judgments, sentences, or fines associated with each case.
You can also order Greene County court records directly from the appropriate clerk of court.
Copies ordered from the Greene County Clerk of the Circuit Court cost $0.25 per page for letter-size document copies and $0.50 per page for legal-size document copies.
For payment, the Clerk of Court accepts cash, checks, and money orders or you can call the office to use a Visa or MasterCard over the phone (for an additional $2 convenience fee).

How To Access Vital Records in Greene County (Marriage, Divorce, Birth & Death Records)
In addition to finding public records in Greene County concerning court and criminal activity, you may want to track down information about births, deaths, and marriages. Typically, these kinds of records are classified as “vital records.”
Greene County vital records can help you check if someone is married or divorced, but there are other reasons to consult these Virginia public records. For example, if you’re applying for a passport or want to enroll your child in school, you may need to supply a copy of a birth certificate.
However, in Virginia, not all vital records can be accessed by members of the general public. This section of this guide will include the most efficient, legal ways to access vital records through official record custodians.
Acquire Marriage & Divorce Records or Certificates via Official Channels
According to Section 32 of the Code of Virginia, records concerning marriages aren’t considered “public” until 25 years have passed.16 That means you can’t request a copy of a marriage certificate to find out if someone is married until 25 years after the wedding date.
Until that time, only the registrants listed on the documents, as well as members of their immediate families, may view them or request copies.
Greene County’s Clerk of Court maintains marriage records for the county. Unfortunately, there’s no way to look up these documents online.
However, if you’re authorized to access Greene County marriage records — or if 25 years have already passed — you can visit the office in person or contact the clerk by phone or mail to order copies of marriage certificates.
The cost for record copies is $0.25 per page for letter-size document copies and $0.50 per page for legal-size document copies. You can pay using cash, personal check, or money order or call the office to use a Visa or MasterCard over the phone (this incurs an additional $2 convenience fee).
Greene County Clerk of Court
22 Court St.
Stanardsville, VA 22973
Phone: 434.985.5208
You can also contact the Virginia Department of Health’s Office of Vital Records to order a copy of a marriage or divorce record using the Application for Certification of a Vital Record online.17 The cost for using this service is $12 per document copy, and you can pay with a credit or debit card online.
When using this online form, researchers must prove their identity by uploading a clear image of their government-issued photo ID.
Authorized individuals can also visit the Department of Health’s Vital Records Office in person to request a copy of a marriage or divorce document. Here’s the address:
Office of Vital Records
2001 Maywill St., Ste. 101
Richmond, VA 23230
The lobby is open Mondays through Fridays, from 7 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
Alternatively, you can print out and complete the application and mail it in. If doing so, you must include a copy of your ID, as well as a check or money order payable to “State Health Department.”
You can mail your request to:
VDH, Office of Vital Records
P.O. Box 1000
Richmond, VA 23218
For more information, you can call the Office of Vital Records at 804.662.6200, Mondays through Fridays, from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
You can also quickly find out if someone has been divorced by using the Virginia Judiciary Circuit Court Case Information search tool. You can specify to look for Greene County divorce records by selecting the county from the drop-down menu before you tap “Begin.” Once you’ve entered your search criteria, you can identify marriage dissolution cases in the public index by looking for “Affidavit For Divorce” in the “Status” column to the right.
Request Birth & Death Records & Certificates in Greene County Virginia via the State’s Department of Health
Virginia law also puts limitations on who can view birth and death records.
Unless you are the registrant, a member of the registrant’s immediate family, or the registrant’s legal representative, you can’t view a certificate of birth until it is 100 years old. Likewise, only authorized individuals may view a certificate of death until 25 years after it’s filed.
If you’re authorized to request copies of these records, you can do so through the Virginia Department of Health.19 The department’s online Vital Records service lets individuals order a copy of their birth certificate or death certificate for $12 per record. You can pay for your order online using a credit or debit card.
Note that, in order to prove your identity or relationship to the registrant, you’ll be required to upload a clear image of your government-issued photo ID when submitting your request.
Alternatively, you can complete and download the birth certificate application or the death certificate application from the department’s website and bring it in person to the Vital Records office in Richmond:
Office of Vital Records
2001 Maywill St., Ste. 101
Richmond, VA 23230
Customer service hours are Mondays through Fridays, from 7 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
Or you can complete the application and mail it to this address:
VDH, Office of Vital Records
P.O. Box 1000
Richmond, VA 23218
For more information, you can call the Virginia Health Department’s Vital Records Office at 804.662.6200, Mondays through Fridays, from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
How To Identify Property Owners & Tax Information in Greene County Virginia at No Cost
There are several offices that maintain Greene County public records related to property ownership.
Among them is the Commissioner of Revenue, which is Greene County’s equivalent of a tax assessor.20 The commissioner’s website contains a Property Identification Card Search that researchers can use to find out information about real estate in the county. You can search properties by owner name, map ID, street name, or tax account number.
Each property identification card includes relevant details about the parcel, including the acreage, most recent sale value, assessed value, and the mailing address for the owner.
To find out more information about using the Property Identification Card Search, you can contact the Greene County Commissioner of Revenue using this information:
Greene County Commissioner of Revenue
15 Ford Ave.
Stanardsville, VA 22973
Phone: 434.985.5211
It’s also possible to track down records about property and taxation through the office of the Greene County Treasurer. Along with other duties, the treasurer’s office is responsible for collecting and recording tax revenue.
The treasurer’s website includes several search tools that Greene County residents can use to look up their personal property tax and utility bill payments. However, members of the general public can also use the site to conduct a Real Estate Public Inquiry.
Using this tool, you can look up information on property taxes by owner name, account number, parcel number, or street name. This includes the owner’s name and mailing address, as well as the property taxes levied on each parcel.
For more information, you can contact the Greene County Treasurer at:
Greene County Treasurer
36 Stanard St.
Stanardsville, VA 22973
Phone: 434.985.1456
You can also look up property information by using the Greene County Geographic Information System (GIS). This service allows researchers to look up properties by owner name or parcel ID number.
Information that can be gathered from a GIS search includes the property owner’s name and address, tax value, acreage, and location on a map. (It’s important to note that GIS maps are no substitute for accurate survey maps when it comes to property boundaries.)
Finally, the Greene County Clerk of the Court is responsible for maintaining land records. While there’s no way to search these records online, you can call or visit the clerk’s office to order a copy of a property document.
The clerk’s office charges $0.25 per page for letter-size document copies and $0.50 per page for legal-size document copies. Color copies of maps or plats cost $1 per page, while black-and-white copies cost $0.50 to $1 per page (depending on the size of the document).
The office accepts cash, checks, and money orders for payment. In addition, you can call the office and pay over the phone with a Visa or MasterCard for an additional $2 convenience fee.

Utilizing Greene County Public Records Ethically: Understanding Citizens’ Rights
As this resource has explained, it’s possible to check public records to gather a wealth of information about someone else.
The ability to do so has been made possible by laws such as the U.S. Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) and Virginia’s Freedom of Information Act.24 These laws were intended to increase the government’s transparency.
However, there are important responsibilities that come with having access to all of this information. For one thing, information gathered from public record searches must never be used to break the law. This includes identity theft, stalking, and harassment — as well as the illegal act of conducting a background check without first receiving the consent of the search subject.
It’s also important to point out that Virginia is a ban-the-box state. This means that it’s illegal for employers to ask about someone’s potential criminal history during the early stages of employment screening.
As we mentioned in the section on background checks above, if you believe that someone has conducted a professional check without your consent — or if your information has been unjustly used against you — you can contact the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) or the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) for help.
In addition, the Virginia Employment Commission and the Virginia Attorney General’s Office of Civil Rights provide assistance to victims of discrimination in the state.25
If you use them responsibly, you can gain a great deal of knowledge from Greene County public records; for more information on accessing various types of public information throughout the state, check out the instructions for finding free Virginia public records.
